Upcoming videos will explore what life on a submarine is like. Click here if you want to sub 😏:
⇊ Click below for more links! ⇊
Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience.
Another note: The Navy did not ask me to provide a link to their website (or do anything for that matter), but I’m going to provide a link because I want smart people to become submariners. The US Navy continues to provide stability and security in ways no other organization on earth does. If you are interested to find out how you can join the Navy you can visit the website here:
There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:
The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch.
(If I did this right these should be working Amazon affiliate links to purchase the stuff I like to use. When people purchase from these links it will support Smarter Every Day.)

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I'd also like to thank the US Navy Public Affairs Officers who helped coordinate this. After clearing the video for OPSEC, they did not limit my creativity in anyway whatsoever. I decided to make a video about the Command Structure on the submarine so we had a better foundation moving forward in the Submarine Deep Dive. This video is just the beginning! I have some incredible things to show you as a part of the deep dive. Please consider subscribing for those. I'm most grateful to people who go the extra mile and support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. It's a super big deal because it brings stability to Smarter Every Day in ways that's hard to describe. In this case, I had to buy a plane ticket to the Arctic on relatively short notice. If you'd like to become a Patron, I'd greatly appreciate it. The link is here:

Thank you for this video. My dad (deceased) was on the USS Alexander Hamilton SSBN-617 (ballistic missile submarine, LaFayette class) served as sonarman then retired after his 20 years and worked for EG&G engineers in Norfolk on the nuclear sub program. It was the BEST time of his life. He went to sea as soon as age allowed. I don't think anything in life could have made him happier. My respect, admiration and prayers for our submariners everywhere.

Most of them don't even have nuclear weapon anymore but it's not told to keep image. We call nuclear submarine mostly because it's the most effective way to power a submarine, you solve three problems in one machine, energy from the reactor, oxygen made from the ocean water, and clean water with the energy generated, and if it wasn't the food, they could be underwater for years.

2:15 You are not free to say whatever I want, it is US military policy not to collaborate with any media which does not depict the military in a positive light.
It is likely that you know this and would, even if subconsciously refrain from shedding light on negative aspect of the military.
But even if you did not, the army has vetted you because they already believe you have no intention of portraying the military in a negative light,
In short, we cannot expect you to be a neutral observer. You are an enthusiastic participant in the military enterprise and not a journalist.

I agree with XO: Submarines have best people in the Navy, smartest people in the Navy. Best & smartest people in the world. When you leave the Navy you will NEVER work with group of people you trust like you trust fellow crew on a submarine. Think ---- There are no lifeboats on a submarine. "We" save the boat and we all go home. Or, "we'" don't save the boat and nobody goes home. Much much different relationship with fellow crew than any other branch of service. On a submarine it is always all about the boat. Never about you. Never about me. Always about the boat.
fyi... I was Cold War Navy 6 years (1968-74), ballistic missile nuclear submarine, Patrick Henry SSBN-599. I was enlisted ELT (reactor chemistry, radiation monitoring, etc). And, engine room supervisor (ERS). There are 1000 jobs on a submarine. And only 130 crew (give or take). Every crew member has 3 or 4 or 5 jobs.
fyi2.. My job required that I do many calculations (math). I used a slider rule. No computers in my day. I did not see my first 4-function calculator until my last patrol. And there was 1 on the whole boat. Today's submarines are way, way more advanced than mine. My boat was decommissioned and scrapped 1984. It is now a steel bridge somewhere.
