Mr. Plinkett's Star Trek Picard Review

  • Julkaistu 18.05.2020
  • Mr. Plinkett's review of Star Trek Picard is here! And it's way too long! But who cares? What else are you going to do during an endless pandemic? Also, how many nails can they finally put into the Star Trek coffin!? Well, Star Trek Picard is another one!

Wait......did I understand correctly that Picard got ALL the Romulans off of the planet before the super nova? Because, if that's true that means that in the first Abrams movie when Eric Bana's character (whose name I don't remember and don't care) decided to go after Spock to avenge the deaths of his wife and kid and all of the other Romulans who the thinks died in the super nova they didn't bother to tell him about - even though you'd think they'd call their ship back to help with the evacuation - he killed all of those people and destroyed Vulcan FOR NO FUCKING REASON WHATSOEVER???????
I knew that the current "writers" on Trek only bother to read the first line of the Wikipedia articles about the first six movies (ex: Praxis already having blown up in "Into Darkness" without understanding what that meant) but now they can't even be bothered to follow the plots of the shit they wrote themselves!!

For all the reasons why the show sucks so bad it hurts, the enforced political messaging, the addressing of social issues and its ham-fisted delivery, are the biggest reason in my mind. It is so blatant and non-sensical at times, it misses it's mark completely. As much as it does adress today's world, it fails as much. Not because it's necessarily wrong what they say, I guess you cant argue FOR racism ( even though they managed to kinda do so), but they somehow are confused over what an actual good story is and what makes it so convincing on screen, as a show. Because a good message does not mean a good experience for the consumer. I think they honestly dont know the difference any longer or they are so trapped in their business model, they cannot admit to it. You can see it all over Hollywood. Star Wars Sequels and Ghostbusters 2016 come to mind, mindnumingly.
And I think they do not even understand the irony of what they're doing to female characters at this point. Decades of having weak female characters, has made them turn female characters into the exact opposite. You would of course assume that is the right thing to do. Nah, man, that's terrible! First, they were forced to lose. Now, they are forced to win. Either way, they are not truly free. They just imitate it. They are not granted the entire palette of character traits. Sadly, the same thing goes minorities. You can feel they are scared to work like artists do... they are walking on eggshells.

I fully support the idea of making Picard a gay robot.
If LIEberals have the "courage" to be SO INCLUSIVE!!! and TOLERANT!!! of people\things with alternate lifestyles, let's see them stop p*ssyfooting around, by making some background character that way, so that they can yell, "LOOK AT US!!! WE"RE SO TOLERANT!!!!!!". Have some b*lls (?) and take it the whole way.
I suggest they then rename the show, "STAR TREK: POOF".

Instead of those captains I prefer the wise words of a Special Space Wizard from a Grimdark universe:
"Don't get me wrong, we're not expecting kisses and fucking hugs and shit, but instead why don't we address the grox in the room? We're all fucking human and/or superhuman for the most part. The problem is things like *THESE* still exist (points out aliens). Problems that we as a species have to deal with eventually. So let's use this day, each year to come together as a species and fuck the aliens. Let's celebrate what unites us all: *_Xenophobia_* "

It's basically Trek tradition to have a shit first two or three seasons. But even some of TNG season one, which were pretty bad, had some charm to them. And even major misfires like Code of Honor, you get what they were trying to do... even if it's completely awful. But Picard has no charm, no sense of wonder. Even in the darkest days of the Federation, the Dominion war, there was a sense of hope because they were fighting the good fight. In Picard, what the fuck is going on? It's just this dystopian shit hole civilization. Some of the darkest Trek episodes had something to say. Picard literally has nothing to say. It's just dark for the sake of being dark.

About Discovery. They had a Barzan security chief. Guess the writers were too lazy to realize that the Barzan are not part of the Federation. The species was featured in TNG but they were an outside species that was negotiating with the federation and others to sell off the rights to access a wormhole in their space. So lazy and insulting

I hate people who hate Nu Trek because its "political", but I hate Nu Trek for not actually being political, and using tokenism as a defense against criticism. "Far Beyond the Stars" is one of the best episodes of Star Trek ever made, from the "darker" Star Trek series. DS9 certainly dealt with darker themes, but it did so in the way only Star Trek can, and it never lost sight of what Star Trek was: A Morality Play that stands on its writing and ideas. Picard and Discovery lose sight of that, and believe making everyone angsty, cynical, nihilistic, and swear a lot will make up for any deficiencies in its writing or bad story telling. It declares everything sucks without offering any hopeful message to its audience or a road map to a better tomorrow. Things seemed bleak in DS9, but through it we had characters who were actually dealing with the internal journey to make sense of things and what ideals should be fought for. Nu Trek is written to turn your brain off, watch the pointless action set pieces, and binge. Being Dark is not the problem of STD or STP, but being devoid of any light, or even just competent writing. I want Star Trek to have diversity, of race, of gender, of sexual orientation, and I want it to be as inclusive as possible because Star Trek is supposed to communicate Leftist values, but I don't want Star Trek to make me not think.
If you're one of those people who are mad at Star Trek for supporting Black Lives Matter, or anything like that, fuck you, you have no place in the fandom. But the fandom does have an obligation to demand more of the series that it not be just another product to consume.

Good on you! Finally, someone is reasonable. I saw all these people who were happy with Seven of Nine and Raffi for example, but it’s clear they were shoved together without much buildup. If I were LGBT, I’d be pretty insulted for these guys doing the bare minimum. And then in Discovery they ruined Michael Burnham, whose character could have been unique, by making her Spock’s adopted sister, which comes off as a desperate plea to make audiences like her.
