Yes, every single penny. This aircraft when operating in a group is devastating and should be feared by any country. It had a bumpy road, but it's electronics are so far advance and above any other nation's aircraft ... there really are 3 aircraft that can accomplish a wide variety of items, the A, B, and C variant. Pilots LOVE this aircraft. If you want military aircraft go Lockheed Martin, if you want commercial aircraft go Boeing. The electronics of this aircraft have progressed and exceed all other "dog fighting" aircraft without using directional thrust nozzle.

  • David Barnett
    David Barnett 22 tuntia sitten

Yes, the times and inflation over a 70 year period affect the price, but WW II fighters cost around 40k per plane. The B-29 was around 100 to 200k. $115 million bucks for one aircraft is insane, but then the 1.2 billion dollar price tag for the stealth bombers is also insane. When Ike left the White House in 1960, he warned America about the military-industrial complex. No one was listening.

No... this plane was political plane to please their voters employment wish. These pilots have to say decent things or they will be transferred. This plane's wingloading is way too high, pilot work load is about 1.4 pilots. If in a high treat environment its not going to cut it. I was a NFO for an A6 Intruder in the USMC and we used the terrain for stealth. We could loft bombs from miles away for our targets and laze or own targets. We had 2 heads and 4 eyes and could alway out fight this money pit. Lucky we are not in a war and we have F22s to clear the air before it comes in, the truth hurts.

You are “flat” wrong about the inability to calculate curved surfaces for stealth which lead to the faceted form of the F-117, given that the B-2 was an older and curved design with a much smaller return than the significantly smaller F-117. We not only could produced a smooth surface F-117 with next to no signal return, but did not do so because the people that approved appropriation for it preferred the less efficient faceted design. A F-117 looks like a small bird to a radar system due to its ability to deflect most the detection signal into a sideband return, leaving a small mainband return. In comparison, the B-2 looked like a bumble bee.
Interesting side note: the HAWK Missile System (Homing All the Way Killer) had a design flaw that caused the acquisition radar to lock on to sideband over mainband returns, which had the effect of scaring that hell out of tow pilots dragging targets behind their planes. This flaw could not be resolved through four phases of upgrades the system, which was eventual cancelled. Here’s the kicker: the acquisition radar would lock on to a stealth bomber or fighter in preference to any other target. I was a 24K during the Gulf War, which was a HAWK Continuous Wave Radar technician, and it was a know problem for our pip 3 and pip 4 systems.

    • infinitelyExplosive
      infinitelyExplosive 2 päivää sitten

@Scott Jefferson It was known to be less observable, yes, but the specific shape of the B-2 is massively optimized compared to those of earlier flying wings due to advancements in computer modelling. For example, compare the leading edge of the YB-35, YB-49, and B-2.

  • Paul Christensen
    Paul Christensen 2 päivää sitten

Apparently the F-35 can be seen from each side below or above and even easier from behind, There are radar signals capable of "seeing" this plane from the front I have read. If stealth was the selling point/main benefit it seems to have failed. In a day and age of mach 6+ self guided ground to air missiles it would seem to me that sending one plane would be a 100 million dollar Kamikaze attack as the plane would most likely be downed on the way home sending more would only add to the overall cost in men and equipment for any given mission. So I give a flat no to the question posed...... it is not worth 115 million dollars it is a one trick pony that does not do the one trick very well

    • Paul Christensen
      Paul Christensen Päivä sitten

@Bathwater Salesman Stealth is the one trick advertised any electronic warfare suites and jamming capabilities are not exclusive to the US only the system and soft ware it self is. Your assertion of low frequency radars not being able to guide missiles would lead a person to believe you still thought that was how they were guided

    • Bathwater Salesman
      Bathwater Salesman Päivä sitten

@Paul Christensen what would the 'one trick' of this pony be? Also, when did I say missiles could only be guided from ground based radar?

    • Paul Christensen
      Paul Christensen Päivä sitten

@Bathwater Salesman In a day and age of "fire and forget" missiles that once "seeing the target" self guide to the target IE alternately identify track and follow their targets, up to and including having the ability to turn around should there be enough propulsion left. Your premise that missiles need to be guided solely from ground radars is decades old. No the F-35 is not worth the money. I am sure many many countries will buy the planes. I hope Canada does not buy into them.....but trump has had the Canadian procurement rules changed taking two of the competitors out and allowing the F-35 in even though it did not meet the specifications for consideration. IMO they are not worth the money. A one trick pony that does not do the one trick very well at the end of the day. A one trick pony that needs political manipulation from the country of origin to sell on the world stage instead of being able to sell itself on its own merits/capabilities....sad given all the money spent designing it

    • Bathwater Salesman
      Bathwater Salesman 2 päivää sitten

Stealth is not the main selling point of the plane. It is just an advantage that it has over every other plane. Regardless if it is detectable or not, it is still harder to see than non-stealth planes. I think the radar signals you are talking about are lower frequency radar waves, which are able to detect the plane but not able to pinpoint its location or guide a missile.

Actually if the enemy focus on air defence missiles which are cheaper to develop and maintain, eventually u will run out of money to maintain0 these expensive planes. F117 and Blackbird are fantastic planes too but they have to be retired because it is too expensive to maintain. It becomes a Tiger tank vs Sherman tank situation. A stealth aircraft like the F-35 or B-2 is harder to detect than a non-stealth one. If you can detect a stealthy aircraft at a certain range, you can detect a less stealthy aircraft at a greater range. It's not a feature which can be countered because being more stealthy is always better.

Also, while I'm sure the future will see use of long distance "see first, lock first, shoot first" technology it's almost a dead sentence the moment the JSF fighter looses that moment if it's going against Mig's and other 4th gen fighters most of the world uses.

@infinitelyExplosive I won't say we should stop producing the F35, the only way to justify the project is through export at this point. Even then it's going to be a considerable stretch to break even. I don't think that was ever the goal. Mismanaged? Certainly, but that's what happens when politics drives a defense project, e.g. the Zumwalt Project and every Littorial ship we've built. I have a niece that works on F35 electronics, she says they sit around more than they do actually producing parts. While I appreciate the $32 an hour she makes to support her family I still see the waste involved. I'm just old (60) and set in my views. I'm sure you know the dictionary meaning for obsolete, anything that has something better to replace it. Not necessarily newer, in my mind anyway, maybe that's where we're having our misunderstanding. My dad flew Sabers in Korea and flew Thuds in Vietnam. My older brother flew Phantoms in Desert Storm and afterward in a Guard unit, he retired 15 years ago saying the F22 was junk. I flew helicopters post-1980, and my son is a crew chief on an F15 for the 144th TFW here in Fresno. His son wants to be a Reaper pilot in 3 years when he graduates high school. Several Air Guard units have already transitioned from their fixed-wing to drones, and more are set to in the future. Guard Units, sure, but the future is unmanned. The F16 is a 40+ year old design, so is the F15. Even the F22 is 23 years old, and honestly I thought the YF-23 was a much better plane on paper. That argument was never a factor because I came to appreciate the F22 eventually. I may appreciate the F35 someday, it's hard to love something that takes so much work to keep it operational. Give me something I can duct tape over the holes and get back out to fight with any day.

@American Motorsports Gaming This is my interpretation of what you're saying, please correct me if I'm wrong: The F-35 is over-budget, has issues, radar technology will improve reducing the difference between stealthy and less stealthy planes, and drones will replace humans. To me, that seems like the type of evidence you would use to argue something like "The F-35 was mismanaged" or even "We should stop buying/producing the F-35". When I hear the word obsolete however, I think of something like the MiG-21. That plane is utterly incapable of comparing to modern aircraft. You're setting such a high bar by using the word "obsolete" that I see almost no conceivable way that you could support your claim.

American Motorsports Gaming 6 päivää sitten

@infinitelyExplosiveTry looking at the effects that I mentioned that negate the stealth technology, not only of the F35 but all current generations of stealth technology. I can post links all day long to establish my view but I can already tell you're not willing to accept the reasoning. But here's one more anyway.
      www.macleans.ca/politics/costly-obsolete-its-getting-hard-to-justify-buying-this-jet/
There have been worse aircraft projects, we can talk about all of the efforts to replace the A-10 for days. But by operational comparison the F22 is a far superior aircraft, and that is the opinion of those that have flown both types. So says just about anyone without a political interest in the project. But I guess that's why we're selling them off to our allies, and we're not the F22, keep the better stuff for ourselves. Pretty much we're at the point that anything with a man in it will be obsolete in the future. Maybe more than 5, closer to 15 for sure. The fact that this boondoggle has spent 27 years and is still an operational nightmare (oxygen deprivation, etc) make it obsolete to anything with less tech that can be an operational weapon even with the paint scuffed up from hitting a Stork. Or, having a Syrian SAM blow up near it. Whatever the real story was.

@American Motorsports Gaming So 3 planes have been lost due to crashes over 5 years. How does that demonstrate that the F-35 is obsolete? How does the fact that the F-35 was optimized to make congressmen happy mean that the F-35 is obsolete and not just expensive? How does the fact that long-wave radar can detect aircraft make the F-35 obsolete? Long range radar can also detect less stealthy aircraft, so at most you could argue that the F-35 is equivalent to older aircraft, except that that's an absurd argument because fighters and missiles still use high-frequency radar for obvious reasons.
The Isthmus article doesn't actually seem to outline any ways in which the F-35 is actually obsolete. Mr. Kelly correctly identifies that the program has been plagued by development issues, but those do not make a plane obsolete. They make it expensive. It wold be possible to make the argument that the program is not worth the cost, but that's not what you're doing. You're saying, essentially without evidence, that the F-35 today has _no use._ If the F-35 is obsolete, what plane is so superior to it? I would hope you're not trying to argue that it's worse than a planned fighter that may exist in 15 years.

und we now know they are badass.
How many 1,000s of these (Don't Frack with Me!) aircraft are the Americans making again?
If they reach the target production cost of $85 million maybe I can get daddy to purchase one for our farm...:-)

As an American. It costs too much. We made this compromise mistake with the F4 Fantom. We had missles so they removed the gun. Because pilots wouldn't be close enough for guns. They put guns on after pilots would run out of missles, and get shot down.
