Also these test are not going to be cheep and test for male and every other type of crash would mean you would need a new car each time. Not cheep.     This video is great work, shed some light on a topic rarely discussed (what the LEAST safe vehicle is). I had no idea that women were so much more likely to be hurt in car crashes! I've also done extensive study of car safety and its history, and found a few vehicles that were very unsafe for their times. The NHTSA full-frontal crash test was first done on 1979 model cars, and the worst performer ever was the 1979 Peugeot 504, which was introduced back in 1968. Back when that test was introduced, most cars did pretty bad, especially on the head injury criterion (HIC). A HIC of 1,000 means that serious injury is likely, and 2,000 means fatality is likely. The average was about 1,350 at that time, so not good. (By the mid-late 2000s, it was down to 400, a minor - if any - injury). The 504 had no crumple zone; the front end was too stiff and the occupant compartment not rigid enough, so the front end didn't crumple enough and the occupant compartment was badly damaged. The 504's HIC for the driver was 4,513! By 1979, most cars had a rudimentary crumple zone. IIHS testing started in 1995, and the worst performer was the 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport, where the driver dummy's foot actually snapped off! The Trans Sport, in my opinion, is the most egregious offender. The 504 was designed in an era when safety technology was primitive and a low priority and was an old design nearing the end of its production cycle when it was tested, the Trans Sport was a brand-new design for the 1997 model year. They kept making it all the way until 2005.

    The Mirage is a low-cost vehicle that (in the USA) is targeted toward people who can't afford most new cars but have an un-founded fear of used cars. I would agree that they're the one of the least safe, if not the least safe new cars sold in the USA. They also get horrible reviews as well, just a bad car all around. The Mirage starts at $13,995. At that price, you can find tons of used cars that have less than 50,000 miles that get good ratings in ALL IIHS crash tests, including the small overlap, and are larger. Even going up to something the size of a Civic/Corolla will afford you a lot of extra safety with little gas mileage penalty.
    But while the Mirage may be among the least safe NEW cars, there are a lot of vehicles on the road - still being driven in large numbers - that are even less safe. If you go back to say, the least safe cars built in the past 10 years (2010 models and newer), you start getting into some of the small cars that still didn't even have side curtain airbags and did poor in IIHS' side impact test. Going back 20 years, you get stuff that barely passed the NHTSA's full frontal test and did poorly in all IIHS tests. And 30 years ago, there were still some new cars being sold where you'd die in a full-frontal, 35-mph head on collision with a vehicle of the same size.

    The IIHS side impact test uses a dummy that simulates a female or a teenager.... Please do your research. It’s also called the Insurance Institute FOR Highway Safety not OF Highway Safety.

    You forgot to mention all the CAFE regulations of fleet mpg averages which causes manufacturers to lighten their cars as much as possible to meet fuel mileage specs, which makes them less safe.

    A nice little dig at Tesla at the beginning why I'm not sure. But looking at the safety of the Cybertruck I'd like to bring in one point from me another from Sandy Monroe. Mr Monroe's point on pedestrian safety was the best crash in to a human was no crash which by the time we see the Cybertruck been sold the crash avoidance will be far better than any human driver. On a side note I live in rural Australia here every other vehicle has a massive set of bull bars how on earth these are legal as they seem to have been designed to kill young children. My point is Tesla patented a design for crash cans for vehicles that seem to greatly improve the way a crumble zone works.
    But time will tell, not just by the tests it will go through but real life crashes. So far one of the main reasons why I'm getting a Tesla is it's about the safest vehicle to put my family in. Seems one answer to the title of this video is an ICE vehicle.

    Everyone is talking about safety BUT they mean passive safety! Active safety is an other story, so sad that a few guys consider this factor. And i dont mean only the features and sensors that act in case your reflexes are bad or distracted. Many guys build old cars (e.g bmw e30) with a ton of goods in case of active safety, to make it faster but at the same time if build the right way also safer. E.g coilovers or expensive suspensions, good brakes,tyres that many new heavy SUVs would dream about in a case of colision avoidance or different similar scenario.

    You forget to factor the cost of the technology , the more expensive vehicles will have the tech to get 5 stars, the smaller cars relative to the cost , use case and customers would get 5 stars in relative testing terms looking for fixed data.
    Would you like to be hit by a Ford Ranger while in a Ford Fiesta , probably not but the survivability would be comparable if you take into account the damage relative to size.
    I mean a head on with a truck in either would be fatal, but would you now say it's a zero star across all cars ?

    What if there is either a crumple zone, or a shock absorbing system that we're not aware of, in the Cybertruck? I'm pretty sure Tesla's engineers are not so stupid as to "forget" to account for collisions in their design.

    Relatively easy to asses crash performance but it could be argued that the safest car is one which does not crash, so other things come into play. Making cars more able to survive a crash has resulted in a lot of modern cars having really poor visibility, often larger "A" pillars and immense "C" pillars which could mean it is more likely to be involved in a crash. Another reason to change the tests are the change over to electric cars which as you point out removes the engine block, but add a huge amount of weight in the form of the battery so a car the same size as a petrol driven one is invariably much heavier.

    "Safer" headrests. Not better. Fucking christ modern headrestsvare the most spectacularly uncomfortable thing I've noticed in all modern cars.
    Speaking as a paramedic.... basically all modern cars are as safe as you could hope for in the vast, vast majority of accidents. That corner strike is insanely, outrageously, unbelievably uncommon. It follows the "sometimes" fallacy. Other cars are not shaped that way and drivers often attempt to counter steer just before impact, so a hit like that is a glancing blow and slide off each other, not a passenger cell intruding murder strike.
    The accidents I see fatalities in are head on collisions. Plain and simple. Even multiple rollovers in older cars rarely have major injuries. Because a head on compounds the speed of the two cars, making two 60mph cars equal to hitting the wall at 120. That's where I see people die.
    And any modern car, even the mirage, would absolutely crush any car made before side curtain airbags were standard. So honestly, dont worry too much. Modern cars are really, really safe.

    The American government is very bi-polar when it comes to cars. If a manufacturer doesn't make airbags, seatbelts, and more recently backup cameras as standard equipment, they literally can not sell any of their products in America. America is so safety conscientious in that way, it's ridiculous. But by that same token, the test by which they measure a cars safety has literally remained un-touched since the 1970's. Back when the number of drivers on public roads in cars that hadn't been built with safety in mind was at an all time high, and when the test had JUST been implemented. Almost a HALF CENTURY AGO. And because of this, American's are convinced that their cars, which are waaaaay more expensive than they should be, are safer than they really are! This is ridiculous.
